Florida A&M University (FAMU) recently held a Board of Trustees meeting, where university leaders shared key updates on finances, enrollment, and student achievements. Acting Vice President of University Advancement, Dr. Brandi Tatum-Fedrick, highlighted the challenges and successes in fundraising, pointing to a $1.1 million drop compared to last year. This decline reflects a nationwide trend affecting corporate donations.
Despite this shortfall, Tatum-Fedrick shared optimistic news: donor engagement is increasing, with more alumni contributing, even if their average donation amounts are lower. She noted promising developments, such as pending seven-figure proposals and recent commitments for the Marching “100” band. Adjusting strategies, the university plans to focus more on corporate outreach and major gifts.
FAMU also celebrated a successful Giving Tuesday with $67,455 raised, marking the campaign’s highest total in years. “The support from the FAMU community shows their belief in our mission,” said Tatum-Fedrick.
Dr. Allyson Watson, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, spoke about academic progress and student success. She emphasized the importance of preparing students for success and detailed plans to support faculty and enhance educational programs.
FAMU President Marva B. Johnson underscored the changing landscape in higher education and philanthropy but expressed confidence in the university’s direction. “The work being done here gives me tremendous confidence in our future,” she said.
A highlight of the meeting was Keyona Williams, a student veteran, who shared her experiences and how FAMU has shaped her journey. Williams advocated for creating more inclusive opportunities for non-traditional students like herself, emphasizing that belonging is crucial for everyone.
Lastly, the meeting honored distinguished alumni, including Curtis Johnson, who received the Chairman’s Award for his leadership and commitment to FAMU. He acknowledged the collective efforts of those he worked with in fundraising initiatives.
As FAMU navigates these challenges and celebrates its achievements, it remains focused on its mission: ensuring student success and engagement, strengthening its academic programs, and fostering an inclusive environment.
