Unlocking Fear: A Gripping Review of ‘Apotemnofilia’ – A Short Horror Film You Can’t Miss!

Clara is about to go on stage in front of a full theater when everything starts to go wrong. Just moments before her performance, she hears unsettling noises. Meanwhile, her mother knocks desperately on the dressing room door. Clara is stuck, battling her own dark thoughts. Will she find the strength to face the audience?

Directed by Jano Pita, the short horror film Apotemnofilia features Lucía Azcoitía as Clara, a woman grappling with body dysmorphia after giving birth. The film kicks off with a tense moment of Clara putting in a contact lens, a scene that sets an uneasy tone. Even though she doesn’t hurt herself, the horror escalates quickly.

This nine-minute film is packed with tension as Clara hesitates to leave her dressing room, despite the packed audience waiting for her. The relentless knocking and pleas from outside intensify her sense of entrapment. If you’re not a fan of bodily horror, you might find it hard to watch Clara’s struggle.

Although Apotemnofilia is short, it effectively highlights the fears of new mothers and the drastic changes they face. As an artist, Clara is expected to quickly return to the spotlight, leaving her no time to adjust to her new life. This film, while extreme and predictable, profoundly captures the anxiety and paranoia many new mothers experience.
