Guernsey has announced £40,000 in funding for a variety of environmental and student research projects. This money, provided by the Nature Commission, will support 18 different initiatives aimed at protecting and enhancing the natural environment. Out of these, 14 projects focus on environmental concerns, while four are dedicated to student research.
The funded projects include efforts to restore dune grasslands, improve school grounds for wildlife, replace old barn owl boxes, and assist La Société Guernesiaise’s conservation herd. Julia Henney, a senior natural environment officer, emphasized how important these projects are for learning and engaging with the community to boost biodiversity.
“Since the launch of the strategy for nature fund in 2020, we’ve seen many exciting community and charitable projects,” Henney stated, expressing enthusiasm about the diverse applications this funding round attracted. The fund aims to address various environmental threats such as invasive species, pollution, and climate change, while also filling knowledge gaps about these issues.
This round included four bursaries for research projects, including studies on plant-pollinator networks and conservation grazing. Angela Salmon, head of operations and education at the Nature Commission, noted the growing number of applications, which shows a community eager to support Guernsey’s natural environment. She was particularly happy to see schools wanting to help children connect with nature.
