The Kootenai Health Gift Shop recently donated $185,122 to the Kootenai Health Foundation. This generous contribution supports patients, caregivers, and various vital programs at Kootenai Health. Run by dedicated volunteers, the Gift Shop has a proud history of giving back. In the last 43 years, its efforts have raised over $1.6 million to improve care and facilities while funding crucial support programs for both patients and employees.
“This check means more than just numbers,” said Cara Nielsen, president of the Kootenai Health Foundation. “It showcases our community’s spirit through years of generosity and volunteerism, making a real difference for patients and families.”
In recent years, the Gift Shop’s impact has grown significantly. Contributions have risen each year: $185,122 in 2025, $160,478 in 2024, $153,267 in 2023, and $72,223 in 2022. These funds are vital, funding different hospital initiatives like the Festival of Trees, Golf Tournaments, a $3,000 annual scholarship for teens, and a substantial $40,000–$50,000 each year for the Cancer Patient Support Fund.
The donations serve immediate patient needs and focus on long-term investments in health care. Recent projects funded include $10,000 for the Kootenai Health Employee Family Fund, $3,750 for the Mammogram Screening Fund, and $31,784 for NICU Angel Eyes Cameras, among others.
Future projects aim to enhance care with $10,000 for NICU NOVII fetal monitoring devices and $30,000 for portable ultrasounds in OB. “These funds enhance many areas of our organization — from lifesaving technology to barriers removed from patient care,” Nielsen emphasized. “Our volunteers are honored to support the health and well-being of our community.”
As support for health care continues to grow, the relationship between the community and Kootenai Health becomes even more vital. Studies show that hospitals with community engagement programs often report improved patient satisfaction and health outcomes. The Kootenai Health Foundation plays a crucial role in this dynamic, highlighting the power of community-driven initiatives.
