India’s electric vehicle (EV) market is facing tough challenges due to its reliance on imports, especially from China. Currently, only six out of 46 EV models available in the country qualify for government incentives under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. This scheme requires at least 50% local content in the vehicles.
Interestingly, most vehicles, including those from big names like BMW, Hyundai, and Tesla, fall short of this requirement. They contain over 60% imported components, primarily from China. The six eligible models are five from Tata Motors and one from Mahindra, showcasing a significant gap in local production capabilities.
The approved models include Tata Nexon, Tata Punch, Tata Harrier, Tata Tiago, Tata Tigor, and the Mahindra XEV9E. However, many other popular models, like Tata’s Curvv and Mahindra’s BE6, don’t meet the local content criteria, highlighting the struggle for manufacturers.
Experts point out that building a robust local supply chain for EVs is tricky, especially at this early stage of market development. A representative from a European automaker stated that it’s challenging to ask suppliers to set up shop in India when the market for EVs is still growing.
The imported components primarily include lithium-ion battery cells, semiconductors, and other crucial parts. According to a study by PwC, local options for these components are limited, as China and Taiwan dominate global supplies.
As more people become interested in EVs, the need for a reliable local supply chain becomes even more urgent. User discussions on social media reflect a mix of excitement about EV technology and concern over the high level of imports. With the government pushing for greater localization, the industry must evolve quickly to meet these demands.
To move forward, India must strengthen its domestic manufacturing base. This will not only reduce dependency on imports but also foster innovation and job creation within the country’s growing EV sector.
