Washington: India’s partnership with the U.S. in nuclear energy has huge potential, according to Vinay Kwatra, the Indian ambassador to the United States. He spoke at an event hosted by the Indian Embassy, celebrating a new law called the SHANTI Act that aims to boost nuclear energy cooperation between the two countries.
At the event, notable figures from the U.S. government attended, including James Danly from the Department of Energy and Christopher Yeaw from the Department of State’s Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation. They discussed the positive impacts this collaboration could have on both countries.
Industry leaders from major companies like Holtec International, GE Vernova, Westinghouse, and X-Energy also joined the celebration. They shared their excitement for the opportunities available for collaboration between Indian and American businesses.
The SHANTI Act represents the most significant change in India’s nuclear policy since the 1962 Atomic Energy Act. It aims to phase out older regulations, allowing for greater private sector involvement. This shift is crucial as India hopes to reach 100 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2047, a leap from the current 8.8 gigawatts. This goal will enhance the country’s energy security and provide clean energy.
Recent surveys show that nearly 70% of Indians support expanding nuclear energy as a way to combat climate change and ensure a stable power supply. This growing public backing reflects an important shift in attitudes towards nuclear energy in India.
Experts agree that international collaboration in nuclear energy could not only help India meet its energy targets but also bolster global efforts to combat climate change. According to the International Energy Agency, nuclear power could account for about 25% of the world’s electricity by 2040, making safe and sustainable nuclear energy a vital part of the future energy landscape.
As the world witnesses rapid changes in energy needs and climate concerns, the India-U.S. nuclear partnership is drawing attention. This collaboration may well be a keystone in achieving a sustainable energy future for both nations.
