Lucknow: Experts are warning that our lifestyles and food choices are leading to serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. A recent meeting held by the Helping Hearts Foundation brought together over 200 physicians to discuss these interconnected problems.
Dr. Nakul Sinha, a leading cardiologist at Max Hospital, emphasized that “everything is interconnected.” He explained how factors like cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and weight affect each other. If we overlook one aspect, our risk of heart disease increases significantly.
When bad cholesterol and triglycerides rise, they can clog blood vessels, making them hard and narrow. This means the heart has to work harder, which increases blood pressure. Reduced blood flow can lead to problems in vital organs like the brain and heart.
Dr. Sinha pointed out that high cholesterol levels are also linked to obesity and diabetes. Excess body fat can interfere with insulin, triggering inflammation that worsens these conditions. “This is why cholesterol is at the center of so many lifestyle diseases,” he said.
Jyoti Sinha, secretary of Helping Hearts, stressed the importance of community awareness. “These diseases are tough to reverse once they set in, so prevention is key,” she added. Public participation is critical to reduce the growing number of lifestyle-related health issues.
Notably, Dr. Kausik Ray from Imperial Hospital in London underlined that high cholesterol can lead to serious conditions like peripheral artery disease, which can eventually result in heart failure.
Recent statistics show that over 40% of adults in India are coping with lifestyle-related diseases. The rise of processed foods and sedentary habits is a primary reason. According to a 2022 survey by the Indian Council of Medical Research, 45% of respondents acknowledge that their diets have worsened in recent years due to convenience foods.
In a digital age, social media is buzzing with discussions around healthy living. Influencers are sharing tips on nutrition and exercise, while hashtags like #PreventToProtect are gaining traction.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial, not just for individuals but for communities as a whole. Awareness and proactive steps can significantly lower the risk of prevalent lifestyle diseases.
