Bhubaneswar Welcomes the 84th Indian Roads Congress

Over 3,500 professionals, including engineers and experts, gathered in Bhubaneswar for the 84th Indian Roads Congress (IRC). Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated the event, highlighting its significance for India’s road development.

Gadkari described the IRC as the “soul of Indian road engineering.” He emphasized that the discussions would inspire engineers to enhance the country’s infrastructure. He stressed the need for quality, responsibility, and a free-from-corruption approach in building roads. Moreover, he pointed out the importance of protecting the environment, advocating for the use of waste materials in road construction.

This gathering is not just a meeting but a major platform for sharing knowledge about infrastructure. Gadkari noted, “Now is the time for technology and innovation to advance our road connectivity.” Recent statistics show that a well-developed road network can significantly boost trade and economic growth. A 2021 report indicated that for every 1% increase in road quality, the economic growth could rise by up to 3%.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India the third-largest economy by 2024 heavily relies on strong infrastructure. Gadkari reiterated this goal, saying, “We need world-class roads to support a world-class economy.”

Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, shared that the state aims for a developed Odisha by 2036 and a prosperous India by 2047, emphasizing the need for collaboration with Gadkari.

Throughout the Congress, various technical sessions will explore new methods and innovations to enhance road construction practices. This year marks the sixth session held in Odisha, enriched by the state’s rich cultural heritage, including its music and cuisine.
