The Indian High Commissioner to South Africa, Prabhat Kumar, recently highlighted how India’s railway expertise could significantly benefit South Africa. He pointed out the keen interest among Indian firms to get involved in the South African railway sector, especially in supplying equipment and infrastructure.
Kumar noted that companies like Texmaco Rail and Engineering are in talks to bring railway wagons from India to South Africa. In addition, RITES, a top railway consultancy in India, is discussing plans to deliver railway engines to the South African market. This collaboration comes at a time when both India and South Africa are emphasizing infrastructure development in their recent budgets.
India is actively enhancing its own infrastructure, mentioning that new airports are inaugurated every year. The envoy drew attention to India’s semi-high-speed train, Vande Bharat, which can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h on existing tracks. He suggested that this technology could be a great fit for South Africa, eliminating the need for new infrastructure.
South Africa is currently working hard to revive its railway system, which has faced challenges due to vandalism and theft. Kumar emphasized that semi-high-speed trains could be the future for South Africa, allowing for quicker and easier transportation without major new investments. He acknowledged the high costs of bullet train projects, noting India’s first bullet train is set to start operations in 2027.
Additionally, Kumar pointed out India’s success in achieving 24/7 electricity supply and how Indian firms are involved in renewable energy projects, particularly in solar power. Apart from railways, he highlighted India’s advancements in digital payments, which have impressed visitors to the country.
Kumar also mentioned ongoing discussions regarding a Free Trade Agreement with the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). This agreement could enhance trade relations among South Africa and its neighbors—Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Eswatini.
With such a robust framework for collaboration, both countries stand to gain significantly from shared expertise and innovative solutions in infrastructure. Seeing how India has successfully modernized its transport system provides a valuable lesson for South Africa as it aims to rejuvenate its own railways.
