Unlocking Innovation: A UC Engineer’s Journey into the World of Complex Control Systems

Hesham Abdelfattah is making strides at the University of Cincinnati, drawn there for its renowned aerospace engineering program. He’s deeply involved in understanding complex systems and has not only published three journal articles but also been recognized as the Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Why UC?

Hesham chose UC primarily for its strong aerospace engineering department. His adviser, Sameh Eisa, shares many of his research interests, making the experience even better. He had a positive outlook on Cincinnati before moving, and he’s found a real sense of belonging since his arrival. Hesham appreciates the opportunity to study in the U.S. and hopes to settle here after finishing his education.

Why Aerospace Engineering?

The field of aerospace engineering fascinates Hesham due to its blend of dynamic systems and real-world challenges. His work focuses on the dynamics and control of various aerospace applications, integrating mathematics and innovative engineering concepts. Alongside his PhD, Hesham is also pursuing a Master’s in Mathematics, which enriches his understanding and skills.

Current Research

Hesham’s research involves several topics, such as:

  • Hybrid systems: These systems exhibit sudden changes, like a car stopping abruptly.
  • Averaging methods: This approach helps in studying systems with rapid oscillations, such as the flight patterns of certain birds or insects.
  • Optimal control: This involves analyzing and managing complex systems like wind turbines.

Memorable Experiences at UC

During his time at UC, Hesham finds great joy in helping students grasp challenging concepts in engineering and mathematics. He takes pride in guiding some students into research opportunities with esteemed professors. For him, UC has been a nurturing place for learning and community building.

Notable Achievements

Hesham is proud of his academic progress, guided by the support of his advisers. Their collaboration has led to breakthroughs, including publications in respected journals like the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. His team won a National Science Foundation grant, a rare achievement for many groups. Alongside his PhD, he’s balancing his Master’s in Mathematics with impressive academic performance. He’s also received various awards, including the SIAM Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp award and recognition from the American Control Conference.

Future Plans

Hesham anticipates graduating in the summer of 2026. His ambitions include securing a faculty position at a U.S. university, contributing to research, or exploring roles in research and development within companies focused on innovation.

Hobbies and Interests

Beyond academics, Hesham enjoys a variety of hobbies. He’s active, enjoying weightlifting, soccer, running, and cycling. He also loves reading, particularly in philosophy and history. In his spare time, you might find him playing disc golf or practicing archery. Traveling and hiking with his wife are also among his favorites, along with playing chess and strategy video games.
