Unlocking Innovation: How the AI 4 Science Programme Has Fuelled Over 100 Groundbreaking Research Projects

HUN-REN’s AI 4 Science program has made impressive strides in just four months since its launch. Already, it has funded over 100 AI-related research projects and trained more than 500 researchers through various workshops and courses.

This year, the program is focusing on collaboration between institutions and has introduced three new initiatives to support researchers more effectively. The AI Ambassadors kicked off the year by reviewing their past achievements and planning future activities.

In 2024, the main goal was to build training and technology infrastructure. The 25 AI Ambassadors successfully trained over 500 individuals and hosted more than 200 workshops. Many researchers also benefited from one-on-one consultations for specific AI questions. A technology platform at HUN-REN HQ now allows researchers to access open-source models like ChatGPT and use custom applications for research image analysis. These efforts have led to the launch of over 100 research projects with the help of ambassadors and the expert team at HQ.

In addition to expanding support activities, this year’s focus will also be on showcasing achievements and enhancing collaboration among institutions. During a full-day workshop on January 15, the ambassadors shared best practices and set ambitious goals for supporting researchers.

The AI Ambassadors are increasing face-to-face consultations to inspire researchers and help them identify new AI-supported research topics. Upcoming mini-conferences and workshops will provide platforms for sharing exciting outcomes.

The new initiatives include:

  • AI4Efficiency: Automates support and administrative tasks like finance and HR.
  • AI4Innovation: Supports market-oriented research from development to implementation, including competitor analysis.
  • AI1Science: Focuses on advancing AI in key research areas for transformative impacts.

Together, these programs aim to enhance research quality while allowing HUN-REN to better support scientists in their important work. The overall goal remains the same: to help researchers concentrate on impactful studies with access to a robust scientific network.

HUN-REN aims to be one of Europe’s top research organizations, contributing significantly to Hungary’s social and economic success. With the new HUN-REN Act effective from January 1, 2025, the organization is transforming into a more collaborative, responsive, and performance-oriented network. This will ensure the freedom of scientific research and deliver multidisciplinary solutions to complex challenges at national and international levels. Researchers can look forward to a sustainable and rewarding career within this evolving environment.
