TCL is set to take majority control of Sony’s Bravia television line, a significant move announced today. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding, with plans to finalize agreements by the end of March. If all goes well, this new venture will kick off in April 2027.

In this partnership, TCL, based in Huizhou, China, will hold 51% of Sony’s home entertainment business, while Sony will retain 49%. This collaboration means TCL will oversee everything—from design and manufacturing to sales and customer service— for products like TVs and home audio systems.

While the new venture will continue to market TVs and audio devices under the “Sony Bravia” name, they will utilize TCL’s display technology. The focus will be on larger screens, sharper resolutions, and enhanced smart features.

This announcement comes at a challenging time for the television market, which has seen shrinking profit margins and intensifying competition. Many consumers are now purchasing new TVs less often as prices decline, making it vital for companies to stand out.

Competition is particularly fierce between Chinese brands like TCL and Hisense and South Korean giants like LG and Samsung. A recent report highlighted that the South Korean government is encouraging local firms to collaborate amid this tough landscape. Several Japanese companies, such as Toshiba and Sharp, have already scaled back or exited the TV market entirely.

Interestingly, this joint venture reflects a shift in Sony’s focus. Over recent years, the company has moved away from traditional electronics. It ceased manufacturing Vaio PCs in 2014 and ended Blu-ray disc production last year. Instead, it has concentrated on areas like intellectual property, including anime and movies.

By partnering with TCL, Sony can redirect its energy toward its more profitable ventures while allowing TCL to enhance its product lineup with Sony’s premium Bravia technology. This collaboration may just be the spark both companies need to thrive in an increasingly competitive industry.

In a recent survey, 67% of consumers stated they are looking for smarter tech features in their TVs, underscoring the importance of innovation and advanced technology in this partnership.
