Penalties Stifling Performance

Head coach Matt LaFleur expressed frustration, particularly over the personal foul, labeling it “completely unacceptable.” He pointed out that it derailed their offensive momentum just as they were nearing field-goal range. LaFleur hinted that the coaching staff might need to reassess the offensive line’s alignment since both Belton and left tackle Kadeem Telfort received penalties for not lining up correctly.
“We need to focus on the basics,” LaFleur said. He emphasized the importance of ensuring players stick to their assignments. The penalties weren’t limited to the Packers; the Colts also faced their share of flags, including a facemask call that nullified an interception.
Elgersma Shows Promise
On a brighter note, Canadian quarterback Elgersma stepped in during the second quarter and showcased his skills. Completing 7 of 11 passes for 109 yards, he maintained a solid 96.4 passer rating. He demonstrated poise under pressure and came up with crucial plays, including an 18-yard completion that converted a fourth down.
LaFleur noted the potential in Elgersma’s performance, saying, “He led us on scoring drives and did a lot of good things.” However, there’s room for improvement; Elgersma made some risky throws that could have been costly if not for penalties on the Colts.
Despite the missed opportunities, both quarterbacks, including Clifford, faced challenges connecting on deep balls. LaFleur stressed that receivers need accurate passes when they beat defenders one-on-one.
