The IWFM Sustainability Report shares insights from the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management’s recent survey on climate action. Titled Tackling the Other Half of the Climate Challenge: Adaptation, the report highlights critical challenges and some encouraging developments within the workplace management sector.
Notably, 42% of organizations are now evaluating climate-related risks. This shift indicates a growing awareness about the need to address climate change more effectively. However, the report uncovers a troubling trend: only 14% of respondents were assessing the highest risks specific to their region. Even among those, nearly two-thirds did not consider these risks to be serious.
The report goes beyond just presenting data. It offers practical guidance for facilities teams on assessing risks and taking steps for climate adaptation. It emphasizes how collaboration among teams and service providers can enhance sustainability throughout the supply chain.
Linda Hausmanis, the CEO of IWFM, pointed out the positive changes in workplace and facilities management regarding climate planning. She noted that conversations are now expanding to include crucial aspects like Scope 3 emissions, which consider the indirect impacts of an organization.
In addition to these insights, recent statistics bolster the need for immediate action. According to a 2023 survey by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, around 80% of businesses worldwide are underprepared for climate-related disruptions. This adds urgency to the call for improved risk assessments and sustainable practices.
Overall, the IWFM report is a wake-up call for organizations to re-evaluate their strategies regarding climate risks. Adopting the recommendations outlined could lead to significant strides in sustainability efforts.
