The search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has entered its fourth day. Nancy, 84, was reported missing from her home near Tucson, Arizona, after failing to attend church on Sunday. She was last seen the previous evening when family members dropped her off.
According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, investigators believe she may have been abducted overnight. The FBI has joined the investigation, which involves about 100 detectives. Despite numerous leads, there hasn’t been any credible indication that this was a targeted kidnapping.
Sheriff Nanos emphasized the importance of community assistance. “We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is present, she’s alive, and we want to save her,” he said. Efforts are underway to gather video footage from neighbors, but challenges persist due to poor lighting and landscaping in the area.
Nancy has limited mobility and is without her daily medication, but she does not suffer from cognitive issues. Reports indicate that ransom notes referencing her have been sent to various news outlets, but law enforcement has yet to verify these claims.
While searching, authorities have collected DNA samples from Nancy’s home, which have not led to any suspects so far. Savannah Guthrie has chosen to stay in Arizona to support her family during this difficult time and will not be attending the upcoming Olympics.

Interestingly, cases like this highlight the increase in kidnapping incidents. According to the FBI’s latest stats, there were over 400 reported kidnappings in 2022—an alarmingly high number. It shows the importance of community vigilance and responsive law enforcement in such distressing situations.
