The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment recently shared exciting news about nuclear power in their latest report. They aim to boost the usage of nuclear plants to its highest level in 15 years, which means more affordable and stable electricity for everyone. With rising electricity demands and the push for carbon neutrality, the ministry is rethinking its earlier aversion to nuclear power.
On the 13th, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. announced plans to raise the utilization rate of its plants to 89% this year. This is an increase from last year’s 84.6%, the highest since 2011. Essentially, this means they plan to produce more energy compared to what they can generate. Each of the 26 operational plants typically undergoes maintenance every year, but officials are working on shortening these downtimes to maximize output.
In addition, there’s talk of building two large and another small modular nuclear power plant. These plans come as part of the 11th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply. Vice Minister Lee Ho-hyun mentioned that they will conduct a survey this week to gather public opinions on these new plants. This survey aims to involve local communities in the decision-making process.
Moreover, the country is advancing the “West Coast Energy Expressway” project to better transmit renewable energy to urban areas. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) also plans to complete seven of its construction projects by 2030, moving faster than previously promised.
Local engagement is key. Vice Minister Lee stressed the importance of considering community feedback on these power grid developments. This democratic approach shows a shift toward inclusivity, as they want to ensure all voices are heard.
Responding to government renewable energy targets, several coal-based power generation companies are now focusing on increasing their supply of wind and solar power. This marks a significant trend showing the industry’s adaptability to changing energy demands and environmental goals.
Overall, this shift in energy policy indicates a stronger reliance on nuclear power while also embracing renewables. The balance between these energy sources could help meet the needs of the nation while addressing climate concerns.
