Unlocking Kashmir: How the New Train Service Can Transform Tourism and Boost J&K’s Economy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated two Vande Bharat trains connecting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar. This direct rail link marks a significant step for Kashmir, promising benefits in trade, tourism, and overall integration with India.

Historically, the first railway line in Jammu and Kashmir was introduced by the British in 1897, linking Jammu and Sialkot. Plans for further connections emerged in the early 1900s, but progress stalled due to differing priorities. After the Partition, Jammu’s railway link was disrupted until a new line was inaugurated in 1975.

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, initiated in the 1990s, finally completed a vital 272 km stretch, connecting the Valley with the rest of the country. This rail system, which includes impressive engineering feats like the world’s highest railway bridge at 359 meters, is crucial for the region.

The new Vande Bharat trains significantly reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar, making the journey just three hours long, even in harsh winter conditions. This reliable connection aims to transform tourism, allowing visitors easier access to the stunning beauty of Kashmir. It will also streamline the transport of goods, lowering costs for local producers and consumers.

Recent statistics highlight that regions with improved transport links often see a rise in tourism and economic activity. Experts predict that the rail link could lead to increased tourism revenue, further boosting local economies in the long term.

With this new railway system, the future looks brighter for Kashmir. Enhanced connectivity means more opportunities for growth and development in this beautiful region.
