Hi there! I’m Lee Petty, the Creative Lead at Double Fine Productions. I’ve been with the team for nearly 20 years, working on games like Brütal Legend and Broken Age. Today, I’m thrilled to share my newest creation, Keeper.
Inspired by feelings of isolation and connection, Keeper emerged during the pandemic. I often found solace in nature, wondering about the future of wildlife and the connections formed beneath the surface, much like mycelium networks connecting fungi and trees.
Set in a remote future without humans, the story unfolds on a mysterious island. What life would emerge there, and how would these beings seek connection? This idea intrigued me and shaped the game’s world.
Visually, I took inspiration from Surrealist artists like Max Ernst and Salvador Dali, who created dream-like scenes. My favorite films, such as ‘The Dark Crystal’ and ‘Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,’ showcase beautiful yet strange worlds, and Keeper embraces that blend of whimsy and depth. I like to call its vibe “Weird, but Chill.”
The game tells a tale without words. It centers on a long-abandoned lighthouse that awakens and sets off on a journey, accompanied by a vibrant seabird named Twig. Together, they explore a surreal realm, revealing surprises and mysteries along the way.
Surprising elements are key to the experience, and I hope players will enjoy discovering them. It’s a game that emphasizes companionship and transformation in a visually captivating landscape. As you play, please consider how you discuss the game’s twists so others can experience the mystery too.

A recent report from the Entertainment Software Association revealed that over 200 million Americans play video games, pointing to a growing demand for unique experiences. Creative storytelling and innovative gameplay have never been more critical to captivate this audience.
Moreover, the rise of “cozy” games, which focus on relaxation and exploration, mirrors a broader trend in mental health awareness. Games like Keeper provide an escape and encourage players to unwind.
