Shortly after biogerontologist L. Stephen Coles was announced legally dead in 2014, his brain was preserved at a chilling -146 degrees Celsius, nearly -295 degrees Fahrenheit, in Arizona. It remained frozen for over a decade until his friend and cryobiologist, Greg Fahy, began examining it.

Fahy expressed surprise at how well-preserved Coles’ brain remained. Despite the immense cold, the brain’s structure held up remarkably well, opening doors to further understanding in cryopreservation. According to a report by MIT Technology Review, Fahy said the brain was “astonishingly well preserved.” This promising preservation stems from a mix of freezing and cryoprotective chemicals that minimized damage.

Coles was among the first to choose “neuropreservation,” which involves decapitating the body post-mortem to freeze just the brain. Most people who opt for cryonics hope to be revived by future medical advances. Coles, however, had a scientific goal. He wanted researchers to learn more about potential damage that could occur during freezing.

Fahy noted that although the brain sections appear to have maintained integrity, not everything fared perfectly. Some tissue has been damaged, and experts remain skeptical about the possibility of restoring the brain to full functionality. John Bischof, a cryopreservationist at the University of Minnesota, stated, “this brain is not alive,” highlighting ongoing debates in the scientific community regarding the feasibility of such procedures.

A recent survey revealed that interest in cryonics is growing, with about 6% of Americans expressing a willingness to consider cryopreservation after death. This shift reflects a broader fascination with life-extension technologies, driven partially by rapid advancements in medical science.

While the future remains uncertain, these developments prompt profound questions about life, death, and the boundaries of science. As technology evolves, our understanding of these concepts may change, sending ripples throughout society.
