Unlocking Military Communication: DRDO Launches Indian Radio Software Architecture Standard 1.0 for Enhanced Interoperability

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), alongside the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and the Tri-Services, has unveiled the Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) standard 1.0. This launch took place during a national workshop at DRDO Bhawan in New Delhi and aims to improve military communication interoperability.

According to the Ministry of Defence, IRSA is a detailed software specification for Software Defined Radios (SDR). It establishes standardized interfaces, APIs, execution environments, and mechanisms for waveform portability. Essentially, IRSA ensures that different communication systems can work together seamlessly.

This launch signifies a major step toward self-reliance in India’s defense communication technology. The goal is to create locally designed, interoperable SDR solutions that are future-ready — made in India, for India, and suitable for the global market. The specification is also designed to adapt as operational needs evolve.

The workshop showcased the development of IRSA, covering its technical aspects and future potential. It served as a platform for academia, industry, and the military to explore partnership opportunities for pilot projects and adoption strategies.

Prominent attendees included Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, alongside Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit and Rajat Moona, Director of IIT Gandhinagar. Their participation underscores the collaborative effort required to advance indigenous communication technologies.

The journey toward IRSA began in 2021, based on the recognition of the critical role SDRs play in modern military communications. A technical team formed in 2022, working closely with IDS and military services to identify user requirements.

After thorough reviews and feedback, IRSA Version 1.0 was approved in 2025, marking it as India’s first standardized software architecture for SDRs. This initiative not only aims to set a national standard but also intends to position India as a benchmark in global SDR technology, potentially paving the way for exports to allied nations.

In summary, IRSA represents a significant achievement in enhancing India’s defense capabilities while fostering collaboration between the military, industry, and academia. The future holds promise for further advancements as the country continues to invest in indigenous technology.
