The Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, recently unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance the use of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) in Ghana. This initiative aims to strengthen collaboration across various sectors, including government, businesses, and civil society.
At the Africa Climate Dialogue 2025 held in Accra, Issifu highlighted the need for these partnerships to ensure research informs policy. He emphasized that investment in nature is crucial for sustainable development. This approach aligns with international agreements like the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, both aiming to garner support for ecosystem protection.
“To unlock the full potential of Nature-Based Solutions, we must strengthen collaboration across all sectors,” Issifu said. “Our goal is to align national priorities with global frameworks to mobilize support and ensure that nature continues to sustain both our people and our economy.”
Issifu also shared plans for establishing a National Climate Change and Sustainability Hub. This center will focus on policy innovation, research, and facilitating coordination in climate action. Such initiatives are essential as Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) already commit to large-scale tree planting and improving land use.
Rev. Dr. Joyce R. Aryee, Board Chair of the Africa Centre for Nature-Based Climate Action (AC4NCA), praised NbS as economically practical and environmentally effective. She stated, “By valuing and investing in nature, we secure our environment and our future.”
Recent statistics show that over 60% of Ghanaians support increased government investments in environmental protection. This reflects a growing awareness of climate change impacts and a desire for responsible action.
