Unlocking New Horizons: DP World Launches Bharat Africa Setu to Double India-Africa Trade

DP World recently launched the Bharat Africa Setu, an initiative designed under the guidance of India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Ministry of External Affairs. This platform aims to connect Indian businesses with African markets by providing access to essential warehousing, trade finance, and distribution networks.

The goal is to promote trade between India and 53 African nations where DP World already operates. With connections to 260,000 sales points, Indian exporters can significantly expand their reach. Currently, India exports about $28 billion worth of goods to Africa, which is only 6.5% of Africa’s total imports. However, there’s a great opportunity for India to increase its market share to 12% by 2030.

During the launch event in Mumbai, officials, including DP World’s Group Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem and Union Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal, emphasized the importance of boosting trade ties. They highlighted how Africa is rich in potential. Simplifying trade processes and improving connectivity will help Indian businesses thrive in African markets.

The Bharat Africa Setu aims to create a comprehensive trade ecosystem. It not only enhances logistics but also provides critical support services such as export finance, marketing, packaging, and compliance assistance. This holistic approach can ease cash flow issues and reduce trade bottlenecks, making it easier for businesses to navigate Africa’s dynamic marketplace.

According to a recent report by the African Development Bank, Africa’s import value is estimated at around $430 billion. With this, there is a significant opportunity for Indian businesses to tap into emerging markets and create strategic partnerships.

Experts believe that partnerships like the Bharat Africa Setu can help unlock this potential. “Trade is evolving rapidly, and platforms that foster connections between regions will play a crucial role in shaping the future economy,” says Dr. Anjali Sharma, an economist focusing on international trade.
