New Delhi: India and Ecuador are exploring a preferential trade agreement aimed at boosting cooperation in areas like healthcare, agriculture, and digital technology. This week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero to discuss strengthening ties.
Sommerfeld’s two-day visit, along with her deputy Alejandro Davalos, marks a significant step in enhancing relations between the two nations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that both countries demonstrated a strong commitment to work together in various sectors, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
During their discussions, Sommerfeld shared formal letters indicating Ecuador’s plans to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA). This collaboration reflects a growing interest in renewable energy and wildlife conservation among both nations.
Furthermore, Jaishankar and Sommerfeld signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support “Quick Impact Projects” (QIPs) in Ecuador. India will provide financial assistance of up to ₹12 crore over five years for socio-economic development projects designed to improve local communities’ quality of life.
The MEA emphasized that these projects aim to foster development and build public trust among Ecuadorians. Sommerfeld also met with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to outline a roadmap for the proposed trade pact. Key topics included increasing Indian pharmaceutical exports and forming supply chain partnerships for essential minerals like copper and gold.
In another meeting with Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda, Sommerfeld focused on improving healthcare cooperation. They discussed affordable healthcare solutions and advanced medical systems, including the recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) in Ecuador for better regulatory exchanges.
Experts suggest that these partnerships are vital for both nations as they navigate an evolving global landscape. For example, according to a recent report by the World Trade Organization, global trade volumes are expected to grow by 4% in 2023, indicating a ripe opportunity for countries to strengthen ties.
