Google is rolling out updates with its new Material 3 Expressive design for Wear OS, but it won’t fully launch until later this year. Users are already seeing changes, particularly on the Pixel Watch.
A key feature of Material 3 Expressive is how it uses the watch’s round screen. New UI elements are designed to fit the display better. For example, buttons are now arc-shaped and hug the edges of the screen. This is seen in the updated Google Calendar Tiles, where buttons for upcoming events are larger and easier to tap compared to the older, smaller pill-shaped buttons.
One Pixel Watch user shared their excitement on Reddit after noticing these changes in the Calendar Tiles. Larger buttons mean users will have a more comfortable experience when navigating their schedules.
As for the updates, Google Calendar for Wear OS just hit version 2025.18.1. However, it’s important to note that while app updates are rolling out, not all features of the Material 3 Expressive design are live yet. It seems like some updates are managed server-side, which might explain the delay in seeing these features on all devices.
Experts in tech design note that such improvements can significantly enhance user interaction on wearable devices. A study from the Nielsen Norman Group highlights the importance of button size and touch targets, stating that larger buttons can increase usability—particularly for quick interactions while on the go.
Looking ahead, Wear OS Tiles are expected to evolve to show more information and offer better layouts. As this new design philosophy takes shape, it could lead to a significant transformation in how users interact with their smartwatches.
