The horror film ‘Oddity’ offers a fascinating idea: a psychic, Darcy, finds a clue linked to her twin sister’s killer. But as the story unfolds, its slow pace and somewhat predictable turns dull the tension. When your husband moves in with a younger girlfriend shortly after your wife’s death, well, it raises eyebrows, doesn’t it?

Written and directed by Damian McCarthy, ‘Oddity’ features Carolyn Bracken as Darcy. She’s a blind psychic and shop owner searching for justice for her twin sister, Dani. The plot thickens when Darcy visits her brother-in-law, Ted, played by Gwilym Lee. He’s a psychiatrist often away at work, leaving Darcy to confront unsettling moments with his new partner, Yana (Caroline Menton), alongside a mysterious wooden box that adds a layer of suspense.

At the hospital, there’s a patient named Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy), known for aggression. The film digs into their unsettling world, making you question who might be behind Dani’s murder. Darcy is the standout character, filled with curiosity and dread.

Bracken’s dual role as Darcy and Dani is notable. Even though they share a face, the sisters feel like distinct characters, thanks to her remarkable performance. While Dani is lively and outgoing, Darcy’s personality is much more introverted and quirky.

Oddity’ opens with a haunting sequence that hints at Dani’s tragic fate. Darcy’s stay at Ted’s house creates an atmosphere thick with unease. The movie has several tense moments, but a tighter pace and bolder scares would have made it more gripping. The ending offers a clever twist that partly redeems earlier slow stretches.

For fans of slow-burn horror, ‘Oddity’ is worth a watch. Just don’t expect nonstop thrills.

Curiously, slow-burn horror has recently gained attention. A 2022 survey found that 59% of horror fans favor stories that build tension over time. This trend highlights a growing appreciation for depth and character development in the genre. It seems many viewers enjoy exploring characters’ complexities, rather than just jump scares.

As you dive into the film, consider how perceptions of horror have changed. In the past, filmmakers focused more on shock value. Today, we’re drawn to intricate narratives that keep us thinking long after the credits roll.
