Unlocking Office Hours: How Drexel University Resources Make Them Accessible and Effective!

As we start a new year and a new quarter, it’s a great time to develop some new habits. If you’ve been hesitant to attend office hours, you might be missing out on a valuable resource.

Office hours are designated times when professors and advisers are available to help students. These sessions offer a relaxed way to ask questions and build connections in your field of study.

Archie Fernsby, an academic coach at Drexel’s Center for Learning and Academic Success Services (CLASS), encourages students to take advantage of these opportunities. “Meeting with your professors can help you understand concepts better and build relationships with experts in your field,” he says.

Finding office hours at Drexel is straightforward. Various departments hold these sessions, making it easy for students to seek assistance. For example, Drexel President Antonio Merlo offers office hours for students and staff to engage directly with university leadership. Additionally, the Pennoni Honors College provides drop-in hours focused on undergraduate research, while the Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) supports students with questions about campus activities.

The Counseling Center also hosts “Let’s Talk, ARC” events, offering casual chats with therapists to discuss mental health concerns. This supportive environment can provide guidance and relief from stress.

Interestingly, the term “office hours” might deter some students. Monica Togna, a teaching professor in the Biology Department, notes that changing the name to “student hours” could make these sessions feel more welcoming. She emphasizes that office hours are meant for students’ benefit and encourages them to come by, regardless of whether they have specific questions.

It’s important to use office hours effectively. Fernsby suggests visiting early and often during the quarter. This way, professors become familiar with you, fostering a more engaging classroom atmosphere. “Think of your professors as coaches,” Togna says. “We’re here to help guide your development.”

To make the most of your time, prepare ahead. Create a study schedule, and jot down questions while reviewing material. If something isn’t clear, bring it up during your visit. “This strategy helps reinforce your understanding and lets professors clarify concepts,” Fernsby explains.

It’s essential to remember that office hours should be used even when you’re not struggling. Regular visits can open doors to research opportunities, internships, and networking. “The more professors get to know you, the better they can support you,” Togna adds.

Additionally, attending office hours allows you to connect with your peers. Studying with classmates can enhance understanding, making learning a shared experience. “Many students fear they won’t know what to say or ask, but overcoming that discomfort now will pay off later,” Fernsby notes.

In summary, office hours are a powerful resource at Drexel. Use them to clarify questions, build relationships, and explore opportunities. Embrace this chance to enhance your academic experience – it might just change your approach to learning for the better!
