Unlocking Opportunities: DRDO Offers Comprehensive Support for MSMEs in Defence Production and R&D

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is committed to supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to boost India’s defense sector. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of a self-reliant India, known as Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

On September 6, 2025, DRDO held a conclave at their Defence Technology and Test Centre (DTTC) in Lucknow. Over 100 participants from MSMEs, start-ups, and industry groups like Laghu Udyog Bharti joined to discuss key topics. They focused on skill development, funding for research and development, and technology transfer to strengthen the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor.

DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat highlighted this moment as an ideal time for MSMEs to immerse themselves in defense R&D. He credited the DTTC’s creation to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and emphasized the government’s goal of a robust defense industry.

Minister Singh acknowledged both MSMEs and DRDO for their contributions to Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Recent statistics show that India’s defense production hit an impressive ₹1.27 lakh crore in FY 2023-24, with exports reaching ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25. This reflects a significant shift toward building a strong, self-sufficient defense sector, enhancing national security while contributing to economic growth.

A key part of this transformation is the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) program, launched in April 2018. iDEX supports a dynamic ecosystem of MSMEs, start-ups, and researchers through financial grants. For FY 2025-26, iDEX received ₹449.62 crore, which includes funding for its sub-scheme, ADITI. This initiative fosters advancements in fields like artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and underwater surveillance, offering grants up to ₹25 crore for innovative ideas.

As of February 2025, iDEX had opened 549 opportunities and engaged 619 start-ups and MSMEs, resulting in 430 signed contracts. Additionally, the Ministry of Defence has approved procurements worth over ₹2,400 crore from iDEX-affiliated entities, further supporting India’s defense capabilities.

In essence, the DRDO and Ministry of Defence are empowering MSMEs through initiatives like the DTTC conclave, funding programs such as iDEX and ADITI, and direct procurement efforts. This comprehensive approach is vital for advancing India’s defenses and achieving the broader goal of a developed India by 2047, fostering innovation and self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
