Unlocking Opportunities: Exciting New Nursing Scholarships Boost Home Health Care in Marin

A Marin university and a Bay Area hospice group have teamed up to support future nurses in home-based care. Dominican University of California and By the Bay Health have launched a scholarship program aimed at enhancing nursing in the region.

They recently awarded $25,000 scholarships each to Madison Alban and Jenna Louise Shea. Both are pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Dominican University in San Rafael.

To qualify for the Pat Kendall Memorial Nursing Scholarship, students must intend to work in home-based care in the Bay Area and show financial need. This initiative honors Pat Kendall, a dedicated nurse with a 50-year career focused on community health in Marin County.

In her winning essay, Alban shared how caring for her grandfather with Alzheimer’s inspired her approach to nursing. She wants to treat patients like family. Shea, who has experience as a certified nursing assistant, emphasized how home health care aligns with her skills and values.

The scholarship also offers a preceptorship for hands-on training with an experienced nurse, encouraging students to consider joining By the Bay Health after graduation. Dominican’s nursing program includes a strong community health curriculum, preparing students for public health challenges.

Dr. Kendra Hoepper, associate professor at Dominican, expressed gratitude to By the Bay Health for supporting the next generation of nurses.

According to recent statistics, the demand for home health care professionals is growing significantly. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 41% increase in employment for personal care aides by 2026. This trend illustrates the critical need for skilled nurses in the field, making scholarships like these even more vital for communities.

Investing in education and supporting students in nursing can lead to better care for patients and stronger communities. With valuable training and inspiration from experienced professionals, these young nurses are poised to make a positive impact in healthcare.
