The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched a new grant program to help small and medium-sized food producers in the state. This initiative, called the Last Food Mile Grant, aims to improve the transportation of Michigan-grown food to local buyers like schools, hospitals, restaurants, and markets.

Tim Boring, the director of the state agriculture department, believes this program will foster healthier communities. “People are becoming more aware of where their food comes from,” he said. “We’re focused on connecting farmers with local buyers to promote better eating habits across Michigan.”

Despite growing interest in local food, Boring acknowledges that logistics still pose a challenge. “Getting Michigan-grown products from farms to store shelves is difficult. This grant is just one piece of the puzzle to help overcome those hurdles,” he added.

The program will provide grants of up to $100,000 for projects aimed at increasing the sale of local food. Eligible applicants include Michigan-based farms and food businesses that collaborate with local farmers.

This effort is part of a wider initiative to boost access to local food, complementing other programs like Farm to Family. The Last Food Mile Grant is a key step toward keeping more Michigan-grown food within the state, supporting both the economy and community health.

Applications are currently open through the MiAgGrants system.
