KOLKATA: The ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and China has opened a door for the Indian toy industry. Local leaders are viewing this as a “golden opportunity” for India to become a major player in the global toy market, particularly in exports to the United States.
Recently, the U.S. imposed a hefty 145% tariff on toy imports from China. This move could change the landscape of the international toy trade significantly. With China historically responsible for about 77% of U.S. toy imports, the new tariffs are likely to reduce their exports and create room for new suppliers.
Akshay Binjrajka, the President of the Toy Association of India, believes India is in a prime position to take advantage of this shift. He noted that the U.S. toy market is worth approximately $41.7 billion, presenting a huge opportunity for Indian manufacturers. With Indian toys offering competitive quality and pricing alongside their Chinese counterparts, the market seems ready for a change.
India’s toy exports have increased steadily over recent years. They jumped from $40 million in 2014-15 to a projected $152 million for 2023-24. Meanwhile, imports of toys from China have plummeted—from $235 million in FY20 to only $41 million in FY24—after India enforced stricter import regulations and enhanced its domestic production.
The potential for growth in the Indian toy sector is supported by recent trends. A survey by the Indian Toy Fair 2023 revealed that 75% of consumers prefer locally made toys, valuing quality and sustainability. Additionally, social media reactions indicate a growing excitement for home-grown brands, with many consumers actively sharing their support online.
Experts suggest this evolving landscape could help strengthen India’s manufacturing sector. According to a recent report by NITI Aayog, boosting local production could create 1.5 million jobs in the toy industry alone by 2025. If Indian manufacturers leverage this opportunity well, they could not only enhance exports but also establish a strong reputation globally.
