On January 23, 2025, Meghalaya’s State Convention Centre will host the much-anticipated second Regional Workshop on Recent Advances in Environment & Forest Laws, focusing on the Oil & Gas Sector. Organized by the Regional Office, MoEF&CC Shillong in partnership with the Society for Petroleum Professionals, this event brings together policymakers, industry experts, and environmental advocates.
This workshop follows the successful one in 2019, which tackled important issues related to the environment and regulations to align with Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for Northeast India. This year, the focus will shift to recent changes in environmental and forest legislation, addressing the growing needs of the Northeast Region.
Dr. Amandeep Garg, Additional Secretary of MoEF&CC, will be the Chief Guest, alongside Dr. Pallavi Jain Govil, Director General of the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, highlighting the workshop’s significance in furthering India’s sustainable energy goals.
Imtienla Ao, Deputy Director General of Forests (C), MoEF&CC, stated, “We look forward to fostering discussions essential for addressing environmental challenges in the Northeast.” Yash Malik, President of the Society for Petroleum Professionals, remarked on the need to balance industry growth with environmental care. Joydev Lahiri, General Secretary of the Society, emphasized India’s untapped oil and gas potential and the vision for an energy-independent India by 2050.
Akanksha Tyagi, Senior Partner at Social Friendly (SFC Asia), the event manager, shared her excitement about creating a space for meaningful dialogue between regulatory and operational aspects of the sector.
Hosted by industry leaders Oil India Limited and ONGC Limited, this workshop aims to simplify complex environmental and forest laws affecting the oil and gas industry. Attendees can expect keynote speeches, interactive panels, and workshops focused on finding collaborative solutions to current challenges.
