The Odisha government is teaming up with the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025, which claims to be the largest such event for the rice sector globally. This important conference will take place on October 30 and 31 at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
Odisha’s involvement aims to enhance its role in both national food security and the international rice trade. The state is known for its rich variety of rice, including unique indigenous types that are well-suited to local climates. BIRC 2025 is a platform for Odisha to showcase its advanced agricultural policies and programs that support farmers.
Additionally, the state will help create a Coffee Table Book on Indian Rice and contribute to a Vision and Roadmap for the rice sector, guiding its contribution to the aim of Viksit Bharat by 2047. This blueprint focuses on achieving inclusive and sustainable agricultural growth.
The Odisha government views this collaboration as a chance to connect with global partners, attract investments in agri-processing, and give farmers a stronger voice in the international market.
Prem Garg, Chairman of the Shri Lal Mahal Group and National President of the Indian Rice Exporters Forum (IREF), expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, noting its importance for the Indian rice sector and the critical role of cooperatives and grassroots institutions in agriculture.
The two-day event is expected to gather over 1,000 international buyers from more than 80 countries, along with 2,500 Indian exporters, 5,000 farmers, and more than 200 organizations. Participants will include research bodies, financial institutions, millers, logistics companies, and agri-tech innovators.
Events like BIRC not only promote agricultural collaboration but also provide vital insights. In past conferences, networking has led to significant partnerships and investments, underscoring the growing importance of rice in global food security. With rice being a staple for over half the world’s population, the stakes are high.
This year’s BIRC serves as a reminder of the essential role agriculture plays in economic development. According to a recent UN report, investments in agri-tech can yield a return of up to seven times, suggesting that innovations in this field are crucial for future growth.
