Oklahoma State University (OSU) just launched an exciting new program called the Horizon Scholars Program. This initiative aims to support incoming freshmen with renewable four-year scholarships and a host of additional benefits like internship stipends and study abroad opportunities.
The program is backed by a generous $12 million donation from 12 alumni families. Starting in the fall of 2026, students can apply for the Horizon Scholars Program by November 1. If selected, they’ll receive $7,500 each year for up to four years. They’ll also get a one-time award of $5,000 for studying abroad and another $5,000 for an internship or work experience.
Interestingly, students from outside Oklahoma can also enjoy in-state tuition rates, making this program even more appealing. OSU has held tuition steady since 2021, with in-state undergraduates currently paying $13,920 a year.
The aim is ambitious: to enroll 400 students each year under this program. Blaire Atkinson, president of the OSU Foundation, expressed hope that more families will contribute, aiming for a total of at least 20 donor families by 2026. She emphasized the power of generosity within the Cowboy community, stating, “Our ultimate vision is that every student at Oklahoma State is connected through a donor-funded four-year scholarship.”
OSU President Jim Hess also praised the program, noting that alumni are showing what a strong work ethic and commitment can achieve. He believes these initiatives will inspire students to reach for their goals.
All recipients, regardless of their chosen major, will follow an interdisciplinary curriculum. This will include humanities, social sciences, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects. The program will focus on intensive reading and writing, as well as special classes addressing current events and relevant topics.
Entrepreneurs Jessica and Bryan Begley, two of the program’s initial donors, are enthusiastic about its potential. Bryan shared, “We believe the Horizon Scholars program will attract exceptional students and prepare them to compete with the best.” They are excited to invest in future leaders.
This program not only highlights the university’s commitment to its students but also reflects a broader trend in higher education: the increasing role of alumni in shaping future generations. As universities explore new ways to support students, initiatives like the Horizon Scholars Program set a positive example.
