Northwood University has exciting news! The Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation has pledged $2 million to create scholarships for middle-income students. This generous donation is a game changer for families who earn too much for need-based aid but struggle with college costs.
Northwood President Kent MacDonald highlighted the importance of this support, saying it addresses a significant challenge for middle-income families today. Many students don’t qualify for substantial public aid, leaving them in a financial limbo. This scholarship aims to bridge that gap, ensuring that these students can access quality education at Northwood.
According to the Pew Research Center, middle-income families earn between $50,000 and $150,000 per year. Despite this, private education can cost more than $30,000 annually, making it hard for these families to afford. In fact, during Fall 2024, over 140 admitted middle-income students chose not to attend Northwood due to financial concerns.
Dr. Matthew Bennett, Vice President of Enrollment and Strategic Partnerships, emphasized the importance of investing in future leaders. He pointed out that middle-income families are vital to the economy, and scholarships like these can help them succeed both at Northwood and in the workforce.
An independent study found that Northwood contributes $212 million to the Midland area annually, supporting one job for every 95 people in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Notably, many graduates from Northwood have moved to this area, strengthening the local community.
Lisa Gerstacker and Bill Schuette from the Gerstacker Foundation shared their excitement about supporting Northwood’s mission. They believe these scholarships not only aid families but also help build a brighter future for the community.
This $2 million pledge is just the beginning. Northwood hopes to inspire more donations in order to launch this scholarship program by Fall 2026. Justin Marshall, Chief Development and Engagement Officer, noted that the Gerstacker Foundation’s vision helps ensure values like personal freedom and individual responsibility continue to thrive.
The mission is clear: making education accessible for everyone. For more information about the Gerstacker Foundation and its commitment to education, check out their website.
