Yunnan is changing the game in tourism and living, aiming to attract both travelers and long-term residents. In 2025, the province saw a big jump in visitors, with international tourist numbers hitting 8.64 million, a 30% increase from the previous year, according to Governor Wang Yubo.
A standout statistic is that overnight visitors grew by 51.8%, reaching 4.95 million. This surge hints at a growing desire for immersive travel experiences. Yunnan is not just a place to visit; many come as tourists and stay on, drawn to its charm.
In recent years, improvements to living conditions have played a crucial role in this trend. Wang pointed out that every urban and rural area now meets national sanitary standards. All natural villages have also upgraded their living environments, becoming more appealing to visitors.
Alexandra Solovey, a tourist from the U.S., shared her experience visiting Kunming. She praised the lovely weather, local food, and friendly locals. These factors have made Yunnan a must-visit destination.
Zhang Boai, a former flight attendant, is one of many who found a reason to stay. After exploring various cities and villages in Yunnan, she and her family relocated to a village in Pu’er, seeking a nature-rich life for her son. She expressed a desire for her child to have a carefree childhood close to nature.
This trend is spurring new business opportunities. In Pu’er, Ying Xixi launched a digital nomad community that provides shared workspaces for remote workers. She’s already seen great interest since opening in February. “Yunnan’s diverse culture and great climate are magnets for entrepreneurs,” Ying noted. She hopes for policies that support startup communities.
Wang aims to create supportive frameworks for entrepreneurship. Plans include developing cities that nurture innovation and diverse business opportunities.
The impact of long-stay tourism is evident in rural areas. In Manhena village in Xishuangbanna, Party branch secretary Yan Di reported a significant increase in visitors, with over 10,000 sojourners last year. This influx has directly boosted local income, with tourism contributing over 60% to the average household income of 80,000 yuan ($11,780).
In Lijiang’s Yulong county, Fan Hongyan turned her travel experiences into a business by opening a guesthouse after visiting more than 50 countries. “The first time I came here, I knew this was where I wanted to live,” she said.
Yunnan’s efforts to improve its appeal are paying off, attracting not just tourists but new residents seeking a better way of life. This shift is reshaping the local economy and creating a vibrant community. As more people discover Yunnan, the province continues to thrive, making it a destination worth exploring for both adventure and a new home.
