LANDOVER, Md. – Wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley has been making waves at Bengals training camp. Quarterback Jake Browning has his eye on him, noting what makes Tinsley stand out despite not having any NFL catches yet.

Browning highlighted Tinsley’s quick releases and ability to win contested catches. “He’s really good at 50-50 balls,” Browning said.

During a recent preseason game, Tinsley showcased those skills. With 34 seconds left in the half, Browning spotted Tinsley matched up against cornerback Bobby Price. Browning threw the ball high, letting Tinsley make an incredible one-handed touchdown catch.

Just moments later, Browning found Tinsley again, this time against undrafted rookie cornerback Car’lin Vigers. Tinsley leaped to snag a fade pass right off Vigers’ helmet and secured it in the end zone.

“I just went up and made a play. Nothing crazy about it,” Tinsley said after he finished the night with five catches for 73 yards. This performance likely secured his spot on the roster. He reflected on his journey since being brought in as an undrafted free agent from Penn State. “I focus on what I can control,” he added, emphasizing his desire for growth.

Tinsley has been studying sports psychology to keep his mindset in check. He approached the game as if it were practice. “If I treat it like that, I’ll stay relaxed,” he explained.

Though he enjoyed connecting with former teammates post-game, he wasn’t looking for revenge. “They’re just another team,” he stated.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor didn’t let Tinsley’s return go unnoticed. He named Tinsley and linebacker Joe Giles-Harris as game captains for their impressive performances in training camp. “He’s earned the respect in the locker room,” Taylor said of Tinsley. “He’s created opportunities for himself and really delivered.”

One of the highlights of Tinsley’s night was when he got the chance to run with star quarterback Joe Burrow during the third drive. When asked about Tinsley’s chances of making the roster, Burrow simply said, “I hope so.”

Statistics show that undrafted players like Tinsley can make a big impact in their first season. In 2020, 26% of undrafted rookies made NFL rosters. The odds can be tough, but Tinsley’s hard work and mindset are paving his way.
