Unlocking Potential: Comprehensive Accessibility Training Through E-Learning

The UNMC Office of Interactive E-Learning is enhancing accessible learning for everyone. They focus on creating engaging, interactive materials that meet Title II accessibility standards.

Recently, the team rolled out a checklist and training guide for developing interactive e-modules. These e-modules use multimedia and interactive features, which can sometimes make accessibility needs less obvious. “With a clear process and thoughtful design, we can ensure Title II compliance,” says Steph Langel, an instructional designer.

The UNMC E-Gallery is a valuable resource, housing over 400 open-access e-modules. These modules are utilized not just at UNMC but also by institutions and students worldwide. The team is currently working to ensure these modules meet the latest WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, ensuring a broader reach for all users.

To bolster these efforts, the Office is hosting a training session on January 21, focusing on making e-modules accessible using Articulate Storyline. This session is open to faculty and staff at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, providing insights into updating existing modules and developing new ones that meet compliance standards.

Participants will learn about utilizing Articulate Storyline 360’s built-in accessibility features, ensuring that all modules cater to diverse needs.

With a growing emphasis on accessibility in education, these efforts reflect a larger trend across many universities. A recent survey found that 79% of educators believe accessible learning materials should be a priority. This push not only benefits students with disabilities but also enhances overall learning experiences for all.

For a more detailed look at these standards, check the WCAG guidelines here.

The UNMC Office of Interactive E-Learning is leading the way in creating an inclusive education environment, ensuring that technology supports every learner’s journey.
