Tripura is poised to become a key player in the IT and data sectors in Northeast India. With its strategic access to international internet connections via Bangladesh and reliable resources like water and power, the state is well-suited for establishing data centers. This insight was shared by S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, during the launch of Tripura’s Cyber Security Policy 2025 and a workshop titled “Cyber Bharat Setu: Bridging States, Securing Bharat” in Agartala.
Krishnan highlighted that these favorable conditions could transform Tripura into a global data hub. He also pointed out that recent changes in U.S. immigration laws, like the increased tariffs and strict H-1B visa provisions, could encourage companies to set up their operations in India, including states like Tripura.
As cyber threats grow, Krishnan stressed the importance of data privacy and cyber resilience. He expressed concern over ensuring the trustworthiness of hardware and software resources. To tackle these issues, the Ministry is implementing trusted systems in all internet-enabled devices and CCTV systems.
The new cyber policy will serve as a framework to protect Tripura’s technology infrastructure. It aims to strengthen institutional mechanisms and foster cooperation between public and private sectors to mitigate cyber threats in crucial areas such as banking, transportation, and healthcare.
The Cyber Bharat Setu initiative aims to build a cyber-resilient India. It emphasizes collaboration, intelligence-sharing, and capacity building to secure digital infrastructure and national security. This initiative aligns with the growing concern over cybersecurity globally, especially as more businesses move online.
Recent statistics indicate that cybercrime costs the global economy over $1 trillion annually. By enhancing its cyber capabilities, Tripura could position itself not only as a tech hub but also as a safe and secure environment for businesses.
Overall, Tripura is on an exciting path toward becoming a center for IT and data, bolstered by innovative policies and a strong commitment to cybersecurity.
