Strengthening India-UK Ties Ahead of PM Starmer’s Visit

Former Indian Ambassador to the U.S., Meera Shankar, highlighted the growing relationship between India and the UK as Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares for his visit on October 8. She noted that recent years have seen significant progress in their ties, with both nations looking forward to further growth.

While Shankar acknowledged that some issues persist, she believes they will be resolved as the partnership evolves. The recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is a vital step. Bilateral trade has already reached $56 billion, with a goal set to double this by 2030. According to recent statistics from the Indian government, this ambitious target reflects the increasing importance of the UK as a trading partner.

Shankar also discussed military cooperation, mentioning ‘Exercise Konkan,’ which aims to enhance the capabilities of India and UK navies. This partnership not only strengthens defense ties but also promotes joint operations, particularly in maritime security.

As the UK adjusts to changes post-Brexit, trade agreements with Europe will be crucial. Shankar indicated that the UK might seek to improve its trade arrangement with the EU without adopting free immigration policies. Such a move could make the UK a strategic partner for Europe.

During Starmer’s two-day visit, he will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. Their discussions will focus on progress in trade, technology, defense, and climate change. The leaders will also participate in the Global Fintech Fest, highlighting the growing financial technology sector.

This visit aims to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UK, centered around ‘Vision 2035.’ This roadmap outlines a future filled with collaborative projects in various fields, showing a commitment to working together.
