Two days into the 2026 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers are ready for Day Three. With five picks left, it’s time to explore some players who could fit well with the team.
Running Back
Eli Heidenreich, Navy
Running back isn’t a top priority for Pittsburgh. However, Heidenreich stands out as a dual threat. He gained 1,994 yards receiving and 1,157 yards rushing at Navy. Plus, he’s a local guy! The Steelers have favored versatile players in this draft. Heidenreich could fight for a spot on the final roster, or he could land on the practice squad if drafted late. If they want a return specialist, watch for Pitt’s Desmond Reid.
Wide Receiver
Kaden Wetjen, Iowa and Barion Brown, LSU
These two are impressive not just as receivers, but also as returners. Wetjen is rated as the top returner in the draft, while both players scored six return touchdowns in college. Wetjen excelled in kick and punt returns; Brown set an SEC record for his speed. Germie Bernard could be another option, though his recent production has been low. Either Wetjen in the fifth round or Brown in the seventh could be solid picks.
Kendrick Law, Kentucky
Law provides speed and some return capabilities but is not quite on Wetjen and Brown’s level. His skills as a gunner on special teams make him an interesting choice. He could challenge existing players for a spot on the roster.
Jeff Caldwell, Cincinnati
Caldwell might bring more depth to the wide receiver group. He had a standout season after transferring, showcasing impressive speed at the NFL Combine. His growth potential makes him a worthy candidate in the fifth round.
Tight End
Khalil Dinkins, Penn State
After Day Two, the tight end pool is smaller. Dinkins, a local prospect, could fill this need. Known for his blocking and soft hands, he might be picked in the seventh round. Other potential tight ends include Dae’Quan Wright from Ole Miss and Bauer Sharp from LSU.
Defensive Line
Rayshaun Benny, Michigan
Benny might not tick all the boxes for size, but he’s close. Playing in Michigan’s defensive scheme could ease his transition. He showcased excellent effort and athleticism at the Senior Bowl. If Pittsburgh looks to bolster its defensive line, Benny could be the choice.
James Thompson Jr., Illinois
Thompson has the ideal build for a defensive lineman, although he lacks some length. The Steelers have drafted shorter players before, so he might still fit. He could be available in the seventh round or even as an undrafted free agent.
Inside Linebacker
Jaden Dugger, Louisiana
Dugger’s size and speed are compelling. Transitioning from safety to linebacker, he piled up 125 tackles and earned a first-team All-Sun Belt bid last season. Many see him as a late-round pick, but he could surprise.
Jack Kelly, BYU
Kelly brings size and a knack for making plays, with excellent statistics from his time in college. The Steelers hosted him for a visit, showing interest.
Safety
Zakee Wheatley, Penn State
Wheatley could join his former college teammates with the Steelers. A free safety with a range, he had a dip in stock after a slower 40-yard dash at his Pro Day, but he still made significant contributions last season. He could be a fourth or fifth-round option. Other names to watch include Arizona’s Genesis Smith and USC’s Bishop Fitzgerald.
Punter
The Steelers might look to draft a punter, with options like Brett Thorson (Georgia) and Ryan Eckley (Michigan State) standing out. Thorson is considered the best in the class, while Eckley offers power and hang time. Utilizing one of their seventh-round picks for this position is a potential strategy.
