TAMPA – Tampa Bay is truly a hub for sports tourism, which brings significant funds to our local communities. This year, Raymond James Stadium will host exciting events, including an MLS match and the popular Savannah Bananas. These events are set to inject millions into Hillsborough County’s economy.
Nearby, in Manatee and Pinellas Counties, there’s a strong focus on developing facilities for future athletes. The aim is to create spaces where young talent can train and grow.
Looking at the numbers, Tampa Bay is gearing up for an economic boost. Athletes are preparing for the State BMX Championship in Pinellas County next week, projected to bring in around $1.3 million.
Jason Conklin, the operator of the Oldsmar BMX Supercross track, noted, “This state race usually attracts national competitors from all over the world.”
In Manatee County, officials recently launched the construction of a new athletic center and aquatics facility. This project has been in the works for years.
Commissioner George Kruse shared, “This facility combines an athletic center with an aquatic center, complete with locker rooms and pickleball courts.” His vision is to attract more visitors through tournaments, especially by featuring an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Kruse also mentioned a need that arose from discussions with local swim parents. They highlighted the lack of training facilities in Manatee County, often having to travel to South Sarasota for adequate swimming pools.
The new center will span 40,000 square feet and feature a competition pool, a therapy pool, a geothermal yard, and 24 pickleball courts. This development will serve both residents and visitors alike.
The facility’s goal is clear: to enable local athletes to train at a level that prepares them for college and Olympic competitions. Kruse emphasized the transformation of a basic pool into a world-class facility.
Slated to open in Summer 2026, the Manatee County facility will be located on Rangeland Parkway in Lakewood Ranch. Exciting times are ahead, especially with the BMX Championships happening on February 8 and 9 at the Oldsmar Sports Complex.
