Now, picture this: his smartphone tells him the best time to plant, a device on his cow alerts him to health issues, and advanced farming techniques help him earn over Rs 10 lakh a year from just one acre. This is the vision presented by the BAIF Development Research Foundation, and it’s closer than we think.

At the recent India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, experts gathered to discuss how artificial intelligence can revolutionize farming for vulnerable communities. BAIF made a compelling suggestion: give AI tools directly to small-scale farmers.

Dr. Bharat Kakade, BAIF’s president, emphasized the importance of integrating AI into farming. “Combining crop, livestock, and renewable energy with AI can minimize costs and maximize yields,” he said. Over 85% of Indian farmers own small landholdings and often face the brunt of climate change. But there’s some good news—mobile phones are making their way into rural areas, allowing farmers access to crucial information.

AI can provide real-time advice on soil health and water management, guiding farmers through the use of fertilizers and pesticides. It recognizes India’s tradition of mixed farming—using diverse crops and livestock effectively.

### Smart Technology for Livestock

BAIF is already implementing AI on the ground. They’ve partnered with Areete Solutions to create smart collars for livestock. These collars monitor animal health and alert farmers to any issues. This early detection is vital for families who rely on their animals for both companionship and income.

Additionally, a collaboration between the Agriculture Development Trust of Baramati, Microsoft, and Oxford University has shown impressive results in improving sugarcane yields by 25 to 30%. For farmers, this can mean a significant increase in income.

“Experience shows that one acre of well-managed land can earn Rs 10 lakh a year,” Kakade noted. To achieve this, he advocates for more awareness through government programs and the need for AI service providers to focus on rural markets.

More farmers are turning to AI, and social media buzz suggests a growing interest. Users are sharing success stories and tips online, showcasing how technology can transform their farming practices. In a recent survey by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, over 60% of farmers expressed eagerness to adopt new technologies.

As farming evolves, it’s clear that integrating AI can pave the way for a brighter future and a sustainable livelihood for many.
