Unlocking Radiant Skin: The Booming Skincare Business in Fairmont

Southern Minnesota Skin Solutions has a fresh, larger spot in Fairmont, tailored for its growing array of services and patients.

McKenzie Terfehr, a native of Martin County, launched her skin care business in July 2022. She recently moved from Highway 15 South to a new space on South State Street, previously occupied by the Center for Specialty Care.

“We’re expanding quickly,” Terfehr shared. “This allows us to hire more locals and keep meeting the needs of our community.” Patients come from across Martin County and beyond, including northern Iowa and cities like Albert Lea and Mankato.

The demand for dermatology services is high. Many clinics have long wait times—sometimes up to a year for an appointment. However, Southern Minnesota Skin Solutions can accept new patients, though the scheduling is filling up fast.

“We originally had three staff members; now, we’re up to seven. We’ll add another provider next month,” Terfehr noted.

In addition to Terfehr, who is a certified nurse practitioner in dermatology, the team includes an aesthetician specializing in cosmetic treatments. They also have certified medical assistants and administrative staff, all working together to provide top-notch care.

The Terfehrs bought the two-story building in December 2024, and extensive renovations took place to ensure it fit their vision, expanding from four patient rooms to twelve.

Common visits include concerns about skin cancer, annual skin exams, rashes, and acne. “We also specialize in autoimmune-triggered conditions,” Terfehr said.

As summer brings higher UV levels, Terfehr emphasized sun safety. She recommended regular skin checks and wearing sunscreen and protective clothing. “It’s about enjoying the sun smartly. And please, skip the tanning beds,” she advised.

While she is not planning any immediate big moves, Terfehr is eager to introduce new treatment options and accommodate the growing patient base. They now own the entire building and might have space for other businesses soon.

Public interest in skin care is rising. A recent survey showed that 75% of Americans are now more conscious about their skin health than a decade ago. This shift is partially due to increased awareness of skin cancer risks and the importance of early detection.
