Understanding the Costs of Living with Climate Change
The Environmental Study Group is hosting a series of lectures addressing how climate change affects us in Northwest Illinois. The next event will take place at the Freeport Public Library, 100 E Douglas Street, featuring insights on climate issues.
On April 8, Jen Walling, an expert in environmental policy, will discuss “Good Climate Policy, Real Savings.” She has led the Illinois Environmental Council since 2011, advocating for effective environmental policies to protect our region. With degrees in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, as well as a law degree, Jen combines her knowledge and passion to create impactful change.
Recent studies show that climate change impacts are already being felt across Illinois. For instance, extreme weather events have increased significantly in the past decade, leading to rising costs in agriculture and infrastructure repairs. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), severe storms in the Midwest now occur over 20% more frequently than they did just 30 years ago.
The final lecture in this series is scheduled for May 6. Each session begins at 6:30 p.m. and features a presentation followed by discussions. Light refreshments will be available, creating a relaxed atmosphere for community engagement.
