Scientists have recently made exciting progress in understanding the mysteries of our solar system, especially regarding Saturn and its largest moon, Titan. Titan is not just notable for its size—it’s even bigger than Mercury—but its origin has puzzled researchers for years.

Matija Ćuk, a research scientist at the SETI Institute in California, proposes a compelling theory. He suggests that Titan’s massive size might come from a cosmic collision that occurred about half a billion years ago. An extra moon, possibly a precursor to Hyperion, collided with Titan. This impact could explain not only Titan’s size but also why Saturn wobbles and how its rings formed.

Using data from NASA’s Cassini Probe, which studied Saturn from 2004 to 2017, Ćuk combined new research and computer simulations to support his idea. He believes the collision with another moon triggered a series of events that formed the rings around Saturn, which might have occurred around 100 million years later.

Previously, scientists thought Neptune’s gravitational pull caused Saturn’s wobble, a notion referred to as “resonance.” However, data showed that this explanation didn’t fit perfectly. In 2022, another theory emerged about a lost moon called Chrysalis, which supposedly fell apart and contributed to Saturn’s rings and tilt. But Ćuk’s findings challenge this idea. By factoring in an extra moon, he argues that Saturn’s wobble now aligns closely with Neptune’s influence.

William B. Hubbard, an emeritus professor of planetary sciences at the University of Arizona, noted that Ćuk’s theory aligns well with the data, proposing it fits better than previous theories about the Chrysalis moon. This sentiment was echoed by Carl Murray, an emeritus professor at Queen Mary University in London, who called Ćuk’s hypothesis “highly probable.”

The implications of these discoveries not only shed light on Titan’s formation but also reveal how much we still have to learn about the planets in our solar system. It’s clear that our cosmic neighborhood still holds plenty of surprises, and research in this field is more important than ever.
