The East Side Lansing Food Co-op is more than just a grocery store. It started in East Lansing and moved to the East side of Lansing to serve a community that once lacked fresh food options.
Today, it has over 3,000 members who play a role in grocery decisions. Ariana Winkle, the general manager, shared how they’re tackling challenges, especially with rising food prices.
Inflation is a tough reality for many, and the Co-op is feeling the impact. I visited the East Side Food Co-op on East Kalamazoo Street to see how they are managing.
Ray Kamalay, a long-time member since 1979, knows the Co-op well. He loves their unique offerings, especially the Stone Circle bread that arrives every Tuesday.
“It’s just a grocery store that focuses on community and is owned by community members,” Winkle explained. The Co-op strives to provide healthy and accessible food, sourcing many items locally.
One of the great things about the Co-op is they accept EBT. They understand that food prices affect everyone.
Right now, the price of eggs is around $6.29, which is typical everywhere. While some prices have gone up, Winkle assures customers that they’ll keep essential items affordable. For example, milk will always be $3.99 a gallon, no matter the inflation rates.
This commitment keeps loyal members like Ray returning year after year. The Co-op continues to be a vital resource for the community, providing food and fostering connections among its members.
