Sucker Punch, the game’s developer, crafted a unique set of rules for this player-versus-player experience. The Collector’s Edition of Yotei actually supplied the coins needed for testing!
Darren Bridges, a senior designer at Sucker Punch, shared with Kotaku that they always intended to include multiplayer, but player feedback on the coin game convinced them it was a hit. Bridges said, “We knew it was a good investment.” They even playtested the rules using real coins—an efficient method that saved them coding time!
Bridges explained how they prototype ideas quickly. Instead of developing complex code, simple methods let them test the game mechanics. The team used actual coins from the Yotei Collector’s Edition, which made this testing the fastest in the company’s history.
While Zeni Hajiki is a fun addition, Bridges mentioned that they won’t have one-on-one duels in the game. The combat system is tailored for co-op play, which means competitive duels aren’t in the cards—at least for now. This choice stems from their goal of enhancing the collaborative experience rather than adding competitive combat. It’s an interesting contrast to their previous game, Ghost of Tsushima, where multiplayer also revolved around side activities, leading to the creation of a social lobby between missions.
Bridges confirmed that the multiplayer direction was planned from the start for Yotei. The development team learned a lot from the multiplayer in Tsushima, and they wanted to create a richer experience this time around. As team members wrapped up their work on the main game, they shifted to Legends to help with development, ensuring that everything came together smoothly. Notably, they designed Legends as a free DLC, which means no extra costs or microtransactions for players.
This system also allowed for more fantastical elements in Legends. The creative team enjoyed exploring mythological themes, crafting new challenges for players that fit into cooperative gameplay. According to Bridges, “The fantastical setting provides a great foundation for building co-op-focused mechanics.”
Sucker Punch has a history of expanding its games, as seen with titles like Infamous: Festival of Blood. Bridges shared that they look for ways to develop and support their games that align with player expectations. In Ghost of Tsushima, they embraced cooperative play as a natural fit for the samurai theme, fostering a community experience for players.
