Unlocking Secrets: iFixit’s In-Depth Teardown of Nintendo’s Disappointing Pro Controller

Repair expert iFixit recently took apart the new Switch 2 Pro Controller and delivered quite the critique. They described the controller as a “poorly made accessory” due to its hard-to-repair design and questionable durability.

So, what makes it so problematic? To start, getting inside the Pro Controller is no easy task. Nintendo has used strong adhesives on the front plate and hidden screws, making it tough for the average user to reach the battery. This means if your battery needs replacing, it’s a challenging process.

Another issue is stick drift, a common problem with controllers. iFixit noted that the technology in the Pro Controller likely means it will face this issue as well. However, there’s a slight improvement: the thumbsticks are easier to remove compared to the original Switch Pro Controller.

iFixit even compared the Pro Controller to cheaper options like the Elves 2 Pro from Gulikit, which offers more features at a lower price.

In reality, the Pro Controller is comfortable to hold and has responsive controls. However, as more users encounter issues needing repairs, it’s clear that Nintendo hasn’t made the repair process user-friendly.

According to a recent survey by the Consumer Electronics Association, around 70% of consumers prefer products they can repair. This statistic highlights the growing demand for user-friendly designs in electronics.

As discussions about the Pro Controller continue online, users are sharing mixed feelings. While some are pleased with its performance, others are frustrated by the challenges of repairability. Ultimately, time will tell how these design choices will affect user satisfaction and longevity of the product.
