Playtonic Games has made some intriguing updates to Yooka-Replaylee, specifically a new performance mode aimed at boosting the frame rate to 60fps. Initially, the game was locked at 30fps on the Switch 2, which drew some mixed reactions from players. I had a chat with Simon Gerges from Playtonic to get the scoop on the challenges and improvements they’ve tackled.
Simon emphasized that reaching higher frame rates in a game like Yooka-Replaylee is no small feat. The game’s vibrant worlds are packed with details, meaning that thousands of objects need to be rendered at once. This brings a hefty load on both the CPU and GPU. Simon and his team had to analyze every level meticulously, looking for ways to streamline the graphics without sacrificing the game’s charm.
Interestingly, optimization began even before the official launch last October. Simon noted that when a game nears its release, certain changes can be tricky to implement without risking stability. So, much of the work on the new mode had to wait until after the game hit the shelves.
Player reactions have been varied. Some players, used to smoother experiences, were not thrilled with the initial frame rate. Simon mentioned that while they anticipated some backlash, many players preferred to play on launch day rather than wait for a higher frame rate.
The patch, nearly 5GB in size, includes a lot more than just the performance mode. There are numerous bug fixes and stability improvements alongside the graphical enhancements. All platforms will see the effect of these updates, ensuring everyone benefits from the hard work the team has put in.
What’s more, the performance mode works well both in handheld and docked modes. In fact, the Switch 2’s Variable Refresh Rate means minor drops in frame rate are often barely noticeable, making the gameplay smoother overall.
Simon hinted that this won’t necessarily be the last we hear from Yooka-Replaylee. The team is continuously evaluating player feedback and considering fresh ideas for future updates.
