Grand Canyon University Track Team Shines in Flagstaff
Grand Canyon University (GCU) recently participated in the NAU Lumberjack Team Challenge in Flagstaff, showcasing impressive performances despite sending a smaller squad.
Standout Performers
Junior Weston Mean excelled in the high jump, clearing 2.09 meters. This remarkable leap not only marked a personal best for him but also ranks him 36th in Division 1. His success set a motivating tone for the team.
The men’s squad dominated the pole vault event, occupying the top three spots. Junior Gavin Dimick took first with a height of 4.85 meters, while senior Misael Colon and junior Quintin Dukes captured second and third place, respectively. This strong performance highlighted the team’s depth and talent.
In the women’s pole vault, junior Chloe Metz stood out as the sole competitor to clear 3.55 meters, securing the win effortlessly.
Distance Runners Break Records
GCU’s distance runners also shone brightly. Freshman Lauren Pahl finished first in her mile heat with a time of 5:19.91, achieving a personal best. Meanwhile, fellow freshmen June Zimmerman and Carina Trujillo, along with sophomore Eva Johnson, also broke their own records in the mile.
In the 800 meters, senior Morgan Lamberson finished second with a time of 2:14.33, setting a new personal record. Sophomore Grace Scott tackled her heat impressively, finishing in 2:21.91, also a personal best.
Looking Ahead
The Lopes are now gearing up for the upcoming UNM MLK Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque, where they will send their full squad. This next challenge will provide an opportunity for even stronger performances as they continue to build on their success.
